Much has been buzzed about Golden Age Project and their line of affordable, yet impressively high-performing recording gear. Though their Neve-inspired Pre73 Microphone Preamplifier has received the lion's share of attention, the Golden Age Project R1 MKII Passive Ribbon Microphone is yet another low-priced point of pride for the Swedish manufacturers. In this video demo, Owen takes a look at and listen to the Golden Age Project R1 Ribbon Microphone on a number of sources, including electric and acoustic guitar, sung vocals and, yes, ukulele. He also offers a bit of advice to those engineers who enjoy culture, picnicking and the occasional spot of vino. (NB: At some point towards the beginning of this video I say that "the R1 is, like all ribbon mics, bi-directional," or something to that effect. I should have said "most modern production ribbon microphones are bi-directional," because, as GW Ed. Director Gino Robair pointed out to me, mics like the Beyerdynamic M 160 and M 260 are cardioid-patterned ribbon mics, and early ribbons produced by the likes of Altec were multi-pattern. My bust.)
