Women were not allowed to work or study - and student intake dropped to just 200 men a year. Now, with a new interim government in the country, university officials are predicting a huge increase in students signing up for courses in law, teaching, medicine and social work. And with the ban on women attending university now lifted - many of the new students will be women. VOICE OVER 0003 Hundreds of Afghan women waiting to take the entrance exam at the Balkh university in Mazar-e-Sharif. 0009 It is the first time in three years they have had the opportunity to attend university. 0014 Under the hardline Taliban rule, women were forced to abandon their studies - and banned from attending school and university. 0022 After years of seclusion, these women are looking forward to returning to the classroom. 0028 UPSOUND 0030 This applicant says that before the Taliban regime fell, women had to stay at home. Now, she is excited to be able to go to university and learn a profession. She says she is very happy hat women have rights again in Afghanistan. 0047 Men and women will study in mixed classes. 0050 For many it will be their first chance to work alongside members of the opposite sex. 0056 Women will also feature on the teaching staff for the first time since 1998. 0102 UPSOUND 0104 This woman is a senior lecturer. She says that being allowed to work and attend university again represents the start of a new life for women. 0116 But Afghanistan's devastated school system needs time - and money to recover. 0120 The Balkh university in Mazar-i-Sharif was badly damaged during years of civil war. 0125 Despite the difficulties, university officials are confident that over a thousand people will enroll for courses this year. 0131 And more than one-third of the students are expected to be women.
