Learn how To Use Textile Medium Correctly Do you want to paint fabric with acrylic paint? You will need a textile medium for acrylic paint to keep the colours bright and washable? Derivan textile medium will convert your Derivan Acrylics into fabric medium paint. Using a textile medium for acrylic paint is simple to mix the textile medium with the paint it will make your artwork wash-fast and durable. It also will give you a smooth application and help with brush flow and will help with making the colours bleed less. You can use acrylic paint without a medium, but it won’t be as permanent as it would be if you used the medium, also acrylic paint on its own is very stiff so by using a medium with the paint you will achieve a softer result. And you will find you get a very smooth application. So we make Derivan Screen Ink which you can use for screen printing on fabric or painting on material ready to go out of the jar. That's cool. If you've got already got some acrylics, then you can add the fabric fixative to it and turn it into fabric paint. So if you want to screen print on fabric or paint on fabric, adding the fabric fixative to the paint will allow you to do that. So how much of the Textile Medium do you add? At least one part fabric fixative to two parts paint up to equal parts fabric fixative and paint. Mix the fabric fixative and the paint well together now, you can screen print, and you can also paint with them. The viscosity will change depending on how much textile medium you add to the paint; keep in mind you don't want a thick surface; you're almost trying to a bit more than staining the fabric. You don't want to get a textured impasto effect because while it will still stick well, it makes it sort of it's going to pick off it'll catch on edges and things like that and eventually it'll tend to peel off, so try and keep it as thin as you can. One thing to note before applying any of these colours to fabric make sure that the fabric is clean but has had all the size taken out of it. Brand new t-shirts will actually have a size in them, and that can stop the fabric fixative, which is the binding part being able to grab hold of the threads in the garment and locking onto it. it's a good idea to give it a quick run through the washing machine first. when we talk about heat fixing what we're actually doing is we are completely curing the fabric fixative. It's a thermosetting acrylic. If you've ever got some paint on your clothes, you'll know that they don't wash out that easily, but that's quite different to the sort of finish we're looking with the fabric fixative. The fabric fixative we want to remain nice and soft, and the colour is really vibrant, and that's what you'll get from using the fabric fixative. You will need to heat set it when I say heat fixing. What I mean is, let's say it's a t-shirt once it's dry, you put down a tea towel or another piece of fabric and then ironing over the top of that what heat as hot as you can get it, so it doesn't burn so if it's cotton set it to a cotton setting for at least 30 seconds to a minute it needs quite a while to lock together and thermoset. So give it a go. Creating your own designs is not only a lot of fun but can be really rewarding
