Len Kemp was born in November 1919 and was drafted into the British Army in January 1940. Several months later, he was sent out to France in the 6th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. When German forces invaded the Low Countries in May 1940, Len's unit was moved up to the Albert Canal, but were ordered to withdraw to Dunkirk when the Axis troops began to encircle the British Expeditionary Force. Here Len describes his experiences during the retreat to Dunkirk, including Luftwaffe attacks, encounters with German soldiers and witnessing abandoned Allied equipment. I recorded this interview in November 2011.
