Understanding Adolescent Suicide Risk: Investigating the Role of the Endocannabinoid System

Suicide among young people is a critical global issue, with suicidal ideation (SI) occurring frequently during adolescence. Yet, the underlying biological mechanisms linking stress response and SI in youth remain unclear. By investigating the role of the endocannabinoid system in adolescent SI and its association with brain regulation of emotion, 2024 One Mind Rising Star Awardee Dr. Hilary Marusak aims to uncover crucial biomarkers that may predict SI risk. This research promises to advance our understanding of adolescent mental health, paving the way for targeted interventions and innovative treatments to support at-risk youth. Dr. Hilary Marusak is an Associate Professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine, specializing in developmental neuroscience. She directs the Trauma History Investigation of Neurodevelopment in Kids (THINK) lab (www.wsuthinklab.com), which uses neuroimaging, behavioral, and physiological methods to study neurodevelopmental mechanisms leading to anxiety and PTSD in children and adolescents. Her research also explores the impact of cannabis on brain development and interventions targeting the cannabinoid system for treating fear-based disorders in youth. Dr. Marusak is the PI of several ongoing or recent NIH awards, including studies on the endocannabinoid system, developmental cannabis exposure, and exercise's role in fear extinction. She also serves as Chair of the Communications Task Force for the Society of Biological Psychiatry and hosts the BrainSTEM podcast to provide evidence-based brain science information to the public.
