A technology created to solve one controversial decision in cricket ended up transforming sports across the world. For years, LBW decisions in cricket were highly debated because umpires had to predict the ball’s trajectory after impact. To solve this, Hawk-Eye was developed in 2001. Using multiple high-speed cameras, it tracks the ball and predicts its exact path. But this problem wasn’t limited to cricket. In tennis, line calls were also a constant source of controversy. In fact, a series of wrong calls in the 2004 US Open semifinal involving Serena Williams sparked massive debate about umpiring errors. Today, Hawk-Eye has gone so far that major tournaments like the US Open and Australian Open have completely replaced human line judges with automated systems. And it’s not just tennis. Variations of Hawk-Eye are now used in football for goal-line technology, in badminton for line calls, and even in snooker for ball tracking. A technology created for cricket has quietly become the standard for fairness across almost every major sport.
