We've all heard the stories of Henry VIII – the manic king of England who divided a country in order to divorce one wife and marry another...only to have her executed shortly after. In total, Henry had six wives – a story made popular again by modern, televised retellings like The Tudors or the broadway musical, "Six" Today, we're going to focus on one of Henry's lesser-known wives: the "other" Anne in his life...Anne of Cleves; the virtually unknown duchess born at Swan Castle and thrown into the English spotlight Largely disregarded by history until recently, Anne was married to Henry for a very short time. She was considered too plain and ugly...too uneducated and uninteresting. She was cast aside as quickly as she was sought after, and yet one could argue she may have actually been one of the most clever the whole time: practicing social and religious fluidity and landing on her feet, no matter what life threw her way. This is her story: extending both before and after the short chapter of her life that revolved around the King. Come meet her and decide for yourself: Was she a stupid, ugly duckling? Or was she a clever Swan Princess, after all?
