What causes the iMac black screen? For some reason or another 2009 - 2011 27 inch iMacs start to get an issue where the screen will go black. You can still hear music, videos, and sound but you won’t have a picture. Sometimes if you put the iMac to sleep you can get the screen to come back on. Also, if you dim the brightness the screen will come back on. There are two causes of this... 1. The inverter board goes bad causing the screen to dim. 2. The reason the inverter board goes bad is due to the iMac overheating. The overheating is caused by the thermal paste drying up and going bad. You must replace the thermal paste in order for the iMac to work normally. You may not always need to replace the inverter. I would recommend cleaning off the old thermal paste first and then if that doesn’t help you should replace the inverter. It’s not really easy to replace the thermal paste but it’s not that bad. It will take a good amount of time however. Once the thermal paste is replaced it will take around 8 hours to cure and up to 200 hours (according to arctic silver.) In this video I show how to take apart a 2011 Apple iMac. I also show how to reapply thermal paste to prevent over heating. This will help fix the iMac black screen.
