Natalie from Chicago asks what are the different types of radio frequency treatments? Radio Frequency is an energy applied to the skin just like a laser. The difference is a laser is a light and radio frequency is electrical energy. It's like a plug coming from the wall. Fractional or superficial radio frequency treats texture, tone, and color. In these types of treatments, pins touch the skin delivering the energy and skin resurfacing occurs. The skin then peels similar to a chemical peel. It helps with melasma, pores, fine lines and wrinkles and improves the texture and color of the skin. We often use a device called Venus Viva which also uses pins on the tips to tighten the skin slightly and improve texture and tone. Deep radio frequency uses external devices to do tightening only. It applies a significant amount of energy to the skin and heats the skin. Thermage is an extremely popular procedure in my practice to treat loose skin and skin laxity. Patients do this once every year to stimulate the cell's fibroblast and trigger the body's natural collagen production. It's a wake up call for your skin. Exilis Ultra or Venus Legacy are deep radio frequency treatments that use less energy. These can be done a few times a month to stimulate the cells and stimulate collagen production.
