Hue Vietnamese is a variety of the Vietnamese language spoken in and around the city of Huế in Central Vietnam. This video was recorded by Edwin Boc, his and Lian's third Wikitongues contribution, after videos of her speaking Zhuang and Guanxi Cantonese. Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt, Chữ Nôm: 㗂越) is an Austroasiatic language from Vietnam, where it is the national and official language. Vietnamese is spoken natively by an estimated 90 million people, several times as many as the rest of the Austroasiatic family combined. It is the native language of the Vietnamese (Kinh) people, as well as a first or second language for other ethnic groups in Vietnam. As a result of Vietnamese emigration, Vietnamese speakers are also found in other parts of Southeast Asia, as well as East Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia. Like many other languages in Southeast Asia and East Asia, Vietnamese is an analytic language with a phonemic tone. It has head-initial directionality, with subject-verb–object order and modifiers following the words they modify. It also uses noun classifiers. Its vocabulary has been strongly influenced by Chinese, with significant borrowing from French as well. Vietnamese was historically written using chữ Nôm, a script using Chinese characters and locally invented characters. French colonial rule led to the official adoption of the modern Vietnamese alphabet (chữ Quốc ngữ) which uses the Latin alphabet with diacritics for tones and pronunciation. While Chữ Nôm fell out of use in Vietnam by the early 20th century, it is still used by a few Gin people in China. Loan: You just had your lips done? / Lian: Right now the colour has peeled off. / Loan: How come it is peeling like that? / Lian: They told me that it would peel like that, some people peel more and some less, but I’m peeling more. / Loan: Some people don’t typically peel a lot but you are. / Lian: Yeah who knows. / Loan: I guess it depends on your skin type. / Lian: Possibly because I wear my mask too much it causes the peeling to be stronger. / Loan: It must be too hot under the mask. / Lian: Yeah there isn’t a lot of room to breathe. / Loan: Your pores are clogged under the mask. / Lian: Would you want to get it done? / Loan: Actually I told my husband about your procedure and how I was interested in it. It seemed like you were fine and weren’t in pain after it, but seeing it now, maybe not anymore. / Lian: Yeah, a couple of days ago it didn’t hurt, but I think my mouth is irritated now because of the mask. / Loan: One needs to be careful when eating. / Lian: I have to avoid sour things- / Loan: Sour foods and seafood too / Lian: You know when I came home I ate whatever / Loan: And you have talked too much / Lian: Yeah a lot of talking / Loan: Too much talking and movement under the mask / Lian: It looks to be healing though right? / Loan: Looks dryer now, are you taking any medication to kill the bacteria / Lian: No I didn’t even go to the doctor / Loan: Tomorrow, I will bring you something for it (her lips) This video is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International license.
