An interest in cousin marriage has seen a resurgence across the Western world with four states, Tennessee, Norway, Sweden and Denmark announcing or implementing a ban on cousin marriage. Former minister Richard Holden introduced the proposal in Parliament and said the practice should be banned due to children of first cousins being ‘at greater risk of birth defects’. The Pharos Foundation is a research institute and educational charity which hosts original thinkers and scholars to discuss, debate and research. This is an except from a lecture at Oxford University, sponsored by the Pharos Foundation to discuss the law surrounding cousin marriage and whether it should be banned in Britain. Dr Patrick Nash is the Founding Executive Director and delivers the introductory remarks to the lecture, followed by Dr Nazir Afsal OBE, a solicitor, former prosecutor at the CBS and current Chancellor at the University of Manchester. // SUBSCRIBE TO THE SPECTATOR Get 12 issues for £12, plus a free £20 John Lewis/Waitrose voucher https://www.spectator.co.uk/tvoffer // FREE PODCASTS FROM THE SPECTATOR Hear more from The Spectator's journalists on their podcasts, covering everything from the politics of the UK, US and China, to religion, literature, lifestyle and more. https://www.spectator.co.uk/podcasts/ // FOLLOW US / spectator / officialspectator / the-spectator / spectator1828 / thespectatormagazine
