Well another amazing movement at BHX. I’ve always wanted to see one of these fly. On the 16th of October my mate let me know that this AN74 was due into BHX the next Wednesday and was due out on Friday. Carrying in the Ukrainian Football team (FC Zorya Luhansk) after losing 0-3 to Leicester city on Thursday they then headed home on the Friday. The AN74 was an updated version of the AN72 which was the Soviets answer to the YC-14 in the 70’s which was designed as a tactical Air lifter. They used a phenomenon none as the “Coandă effect” which basically means the air is pushed down onto the aircraft’s surfaces by the thrust of engines to push the aircraft down onto the runway and produces more lift by pushing air under the flaps giving the aircraft STOL performance when required. This also makes sure the engines are out of the way of debris and FOD as they are on top of the wings. They are pair of Lotarev D-36’s the aircraft has a good power to weight ratio. Which is useful when your using unpaved, gravel, dirt, snow, ice strips. It also has hinged ramp door for use an cargo aircraft. In this configuration it can Carry 7.5 tonnes. It can operate in conditions with temperatures as low as -45 to as high as 60 degrees. It can be fitted with a ski landing gear for these types of missions. It carry up to 52 passengers in PAX configuration. After the full Soviet Union and end of Cold War a lot of ex soviet AF aircraft ended up with Commercial operators within in old Cold War pack. Ukraine was one of those and one of carries Motor Sich airlines, operating the only PAX variant left in the world operating Passenger flights and scheduled operations. She was 28 years old and was built in 1992. Antonov built just 65 AN74’s between 1985 and 2004, of which only 11 are left in commercial operation in the world. So they are a incredibly rare sight especially outside the Ukraine. It’s also so different to any western aircraft and really cool looking. So me and mate decided to go for it. We decided to go Friday for the departure. Knowing that this would attract a lot of attention. We got there nice and early to get the space we wanted. We also had a few other interesting things throughout the day between 7:30am to 17:30ish pm which I’ll upload in a separate video with AN74 included. She was due out originally at 4 but that suddenly changed to 3. After a long wait in the cold for an hour watching the other stuff she finally was loaded up with the team and fired up. She taxied out and blasted out of RWY15. Lovely sound and awesomely slow climb. In fact on the way over here it took 6hrs to get here from Ukraine. But anyway a very rare sight to see in the UK. The last AN74 to visit Birmingham was three years ago as result lots of people turned out for it. So sorry about the talking and irritating camera clicking what can you do.🙄🤷♂️🤣. Anyway other than that it was rare little gem to get we also got few other rare things which will be coming out tomorrow. In the meantime enjoy this Soviet tank lifting off. Hope you enjoy the video.
