By offering foot care clinics throughout the Ottawa area, Soft Soles helps individuals maintain mobility, independence, and overall well-being. Founded in 2011 by Michelle De Grandmont, Soft Soles grew out of her work teaching in the Advanced Diabetic Foot Care Nurse Program at Algonquin College. Michelle brings more than 15 years of experience in gerontology, acute care medicine, education, leadership, community and long-term care, along with training in holistic healing modalities. She currently instructs nurses across Ontario in both the art and science of foot care through Loyalist College, St. Lawrence College, and Foot Canada Training. “I feel privileged to have built a broad and meaningful practice spanning gerontology, acute care, education, leadership, community health, and holistic care. In recent years, my work has focused primarily on education and advocacy. I have supported long-term care homes, acute care settings, community partners, caregivers, individuals, families, and healthcare professionals by identifying the needs of older adults, clarifying goals of care, navigating available resources, and creating accessible opportunities for learning and skill development. Alongside my professional path, I have also navigated a personal one—organizing, supporting, and advocating for the care needs of my parents and extended family. These experiences revealed ongoing gaps within the healthcare system, including limited communication between care teams, uncertainty about where to turn for answers, outdated models of care, and insufficient supports for caregivers, individuals, and healthcare professionals. These insights have shaped the direction of my work today. Drawing on both lived experience and professional expertise, I am committed to helping individuals, caregivers, professionals, and organizations achieve meaningful and sustainable outcomes.
