In 1854, seven compassionate and determined women came together to create a hospital for Baltimore’s sick and poor. It was chartered The Union Protestant Infirmary on November 16, 1854, and equipped for only 20 patients. The new hospital at the corner of Baltimore and Stricker Streets was furnished with donations that included “ an overwhelming number of Bibles, 100 cotton bats, 6 flatirons, 2 spittoons, and invalid’s chair, a basket of grapes, and 15 bananas.” Learn more about the hospital: http://ow.ly/Mll1f In 1923, the hospital moved to Calvert and 33rd Streets in northern Baltimore City and changed its name to Union Memorial Hospital. The 249-bed, nationally recognized specialty hospital continues its rich tradition of caring for patients, research and education. MedStar Union Memorial Hospital is a proud member of MedStar Health, and the oldest in its ten hospital system. MedStar Union Memorial Hospital is the home of the nation’s premier hand and upper extremities center, the Curtis National Hand Center. Here, some of the most innovative and groundbreaking microsurgical work has been advanced, like the recent landmark bi-lateral arm transplant. Our heart program, a leading cardiac regional treatment center, has been recognized by the Cleveland Clinic as a partner for treating heart patients and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. And our orthopaedics and oldest hospital-based sports medicine program continue to be regionally and nationally acclaimed.
