Many Muslims wonder whether it is permissible to eat food at the house of a deceased person when offering condolences, especially when neighbors and relatives send food to the grieving family. Sheikh Assim Al-Hakeem clarifies that the issue is not the food itself, as the food is halal, but rather the act of gathering for mourning and sitting to eat as part of a dedicated condolence event. He explains, based on the statement of the Companion Jarir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنه), that the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ considered organized mourning gatherings and preparing food for such gatherings to be part of wailing, which is a major sin in Islam. Wailing includes practices like screaming, slapping the face, tearing clothes, and exaggerated expressions of grief. Over time, structured condolence events with seating, lighting, blocked streets, Quran recitations over speakers, and communal meals have become normalized — yet these practices have no basis in the Sunnah. Islam encourages giving condolences, but without formal gatherings, ceremonies, or meals. The Sunnah way is to offer condolences naturally — when meeting the family at the masjid, work, market, or by making a brief visit to their home without staying long or participating in mourning-specific events. Turning grief into organized social functions contradicts the simplicity and dignity Islam teaches during times of loss. True compassion lies in making du‘a for the deceased, comforting the family briefly, and avoiding cultural practices that lead to innovation in the religion. Islam is clear, balanced, and merciful — and following the Sunnah protects us from falling into actions that were never part of the Prophet’s ﷺ guidance. #AssimAlHakeem #IslamicRuling #CondolencesInIslam #Bidah #Sunnah #Janazah #MourningInIslam #IslamicGuidance #HalalAndHaram #DeathInIslam #MuslimPractices #Aqeedah
