End shot of Uysal STORYLINE Turkish troops pounded suspected Kurdish rebel camps in northern Iraq with artillery fire, a newspaper reported on Wednesday, after the government announced it would seek parliament's approval for a cross-border military operation. Turkey's government said on Tuesday it had begun preparations for its army to cross the border in pursuit of rebels belonging to the Kurdistan Workers Party. A member of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's governing Justice and Development Party said the government would seek parliament's approval. The measure, however, was unlikely to come to the floor before the end of a four-day religious holiday on Sunday, another party official said on Wednesday. Footage captured by an AP Television crew on Wednesday showed trucks carrying Turkish military tanks driving towards the Turkish-Iraqi border. In the past, Turkey has carried out smaller-scale "hot pursuit" operations in Iraq that officials say do not require parliamentary approval. Its last major incursion was in 1997. On Tuesday, Turkish troops "squeezed" a group of about 80 rebels on Mount Gabar, in Sirnak, the Hurriyet newspaper reported. Escape routes were being bombed by helicopter gunships while transport helicopters were airlifting special commando units to strategic points. Turkish troops were also shelling suspected PKK camps in the regions of Kanimasa, Nazdur and Sinath, in northern Iraq, from positions in Turkey's Hakkari province, just across the border, Hurriyet reported. Residents of a Kurdish village near the border said their village was "bombarded by Turkish army artillery" late on Monday evening. AP Television on Tuesday filmed smoke rising from the mountains surrounding Dera Loc - located in Irbil which is one the three northern provinces of Iraq's Kurdistan autonomous region. Recent tensions have fuelled rumours on both sides of the border that the crossing would be closed - causing panic among area residents. Communities on both side of the border are heavily dependent on cross border trade - which accounts for much of the area's economic revenue. "We don't want war. All the people here are suffering because of that," a man from Cizre, a Turkish village near the border, told AP Television. Gule Uysal, who claims to be the sister of PKK member killed in 1992, called on "Turks and Kurds to come together and find a way out". "Our brothers, uncles, fathers get killed because of this war," she added, holding up a photograph of her dead brother. The fighting has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
