Lago di Braies (German: Pragser Wildsee) is a natural alpine lake in the municipality of Braies (German: Prags), in South Tyrol, northern Italy. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,496 metres (4,908 ft) above sea level, the lake lies at the head of the Valle di Braies, a side valley branching north from the Val Pusteria (Pustertal). It forms part of the Fanes–Sennes–Braies Nature Park and is enclosed by the dramatic limestone peaks of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most prominent mountain overlooking the lake is Croda del Becco (German: Seekofel), which rises to 2,810 metres and offers panoramic views of the surrounding region. Lago di Braies was formed by a prehistoric landslide that blocked the valley, creating a natural basin later filled by water from underground springs, small mountain streams, and snowmelt. The lake covers an area of approximately 31 hectares (77 acres) and reaches a maximum depth of around 36 metres. Its waters are noted for their striking turquoise and emerald hues, a result of light refraction, mineral content, and the pale dolomitic rock of the lakebed. Seasonal variations in temperature and inflow cause subtle changes in water colour throughout the year. The lake has long held cultural significance for the local Ladin population. According to Ladin mythology, Lago di Braies is linked to the legend of the Kingdom of the Fanes, a mythical realm said to have disappeared into the lake as a refuge from invaders. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the area gained prominence as a destination for alpine tourism, particularly after the construction of the nearby Hotel Lago di Braies, which hosted mountaineers, artists, and members of European nobility. During the final days of the Second World War, Lago di Braies was the site of a notable historical event when prominent prisoners from Nazi concentration camps were temporarily held there before being liberated by advancing Allied forces. A memorial near the lake commemorates this episode. Today, Lago di Braies is one of the most visited natural attractions in the Dolomites. A well-maintained circular trail of approximately 3.5 kilometres allows visitors to walk around the lake, while marked hiking paths connect it to higher alpine routes, including the ascent to Croda del Becco. Recreational activities at the lake are limited to preserve its natural character; swimming is generally discouraged due to low water temperatures, while traditional wooden rowboats are permitted for leisure use. Motorised watercraft are prohibited. Access to the lake is regulated, particularly during peak summer months, to manage visitor numbers and reduce environmental impact. Conservation measures are enforced as part of the broader protection framework of the Fanes–Sennes–Braies Nature Park, which aims to safeguard the region’s biodiversity, landscapes, and cultural heritage.
