In April 1994, hell on Earth arrived in Rwanda. In the space of 100 days, more than one million people were murdered in one of the most brutal genocides of recent history. Before the colonial era, the population of what is now Rwanda — Tutsis, Hutus and Twa — lived side by side. German and later Belgian colonial policies reshaped ethnic identities and tensions, laying the foundations for the violence whose consequences are still felt today. Produced for Telesur, the Latin American television network with presence across multiple countries, this report was filmed on the 20th anniversary of the genocide. Through testimonies of survivors, historical analysis and voices from the Rwandan diaspora, the film revisits the roots of the conflict, the colonial legacy, and the aftermath of the genocide. The documentary also travels to Belgium, where part of the Rwandan opposition lives in exile, and examines the political climate in Rwanda under President Paul Kagame, questioning the official narrative of reconciliation and the limits placed on political freedoms. Twenty years later, Rwanda remains marked by a fragile calm, where memory, power and unresolved trauma coexist. #Rwanda #Genocide #HumanRights #Documentary #AfricanHistory #Journalism #Telesur #ÉbanoStories
