On February 18, 2025, the United Nations Security Council convened a ministerial-level open debate on "Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance," chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as China holds the Council's presidency for February. The session focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation and addressing pressing global challenges. In his opening remarks at the Council, and at a stake-out with journalists, Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized China's commitment to supporting all efforts conducive to peace, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He reiterated China's stance, as outlined by President Xi Jinping, which includes refraining from seeking selfish gains, not adding fuel to the fire, creating conditions for the restoration of peace, and reducing negative impacts on the global economy. Wang stated, "China supports all efforts conducive to peace talks." Addressing the situation in the Middle East, Wang underscored the importance of upholding the two-state solution and cautioned against using Gaza and the West Bank as "bargaining chips" in political negotiations. He asserted, "Gaza and the West Bank are the homeland of the Palestinian people, not a bargaining chip in political trade-offs."
