Zehanpora village in Baramulla, Kashmir, long appeared as quiet, unmarked mounds—until archival photographs preserved in France helped confirm what many locals and scholars had long suspected. In 2023, archaeologist Dr. Mohammad Ajmal Shah located early images of three stupas in a French museum collection. These photographs did not “discover” the site, but they became a crucial visual clue that supported systematic archaeological investigation. Subsequent ground surveys, drone mapping, and excavations carried out by the Department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums (J&K), in collaboration with the University of Kashmir and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), revealed a major Kushan-period Buddhist complex, including stupas, monastic structures, and associated remains.
