An immigration raid aimed at vendors on New York City’s storied Canal Street descended into turmoil on Tuesday afternoon, as onlookers and demonstrators challenged federal officers and attempted to impede their movement. The clash between agents and several hundred irate New Yorkers unfolded along the bustling retail strip long known as a centre of the city’s semi-clandestine trade in imitation designer handbags, watches, perfume and sunglasses, alongside mobile phones and assorted consumer electronics and various accessories. Federal officers were witnessed carrying out one of multiple arrests in the vicinity, taking into custody a street seller who appeared to be offering rhinestone-encrusted smartphone cases for sale.
