A Lynnwood High graduate says a diploma she didn’t earn disqualified her from a free Edmonds School District vocational program, leading her family to sue. What she says happened: Makena Simonsen graduated with a 3.87 GPA, but says she finished senior year reading at a first-grade level. Why it matters (family says): Because she received a diploma, she says she was ineligible for the district’s vocational transition program for students with special needs. Cost impact: She enrolled in a similar program at Bellevue College, reported as more than $40,000 per year, and she faces about $160,000 in debt upon graduation. What’s still disputed: The family is suing, alleging “benevolent discrimination.” The Edmonds School District denied wrongdoing in a court filing and declined further comment, KING reports.
