Course highlight real | 2024 Dialogue, Disagreement and Democracy | University of Washington LEAD 298 (Autumn 2024). 2024: Dialogue, Disagreement and Democracy was organized by Undergraduate Academic Affairs with video production by the UW Continuum College and support from the Provost’s Office. ____________________ In an era marked by polarization, the University of Washington’s LEAD 298: Dialogue, Disagreement and Democracy course offered a unique opportunity for undergraduates to engage thoughtfully with contentious issues. Throughout the autumn 2024 quarter, students explored how to navigate information, foster relationships and have productive conversations in a world divided by differing viewpoints. From the challenges of a contentious election cycle to the rising cost of living in Seattle, and from global conflicts to local collective action, the issues of 2024 posed urgent questions about how we bridge divides in society. How can we stay connected when our beliefs clash? How do we evaluate truth in a sea of misinformation? And how can democracy endure in a climate of deep disagreement? In this course series, Professor Ed Taylor, dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, led powerful conversations with scholars, community leaders and people with opposing views. Topics covered include misinformation, the nature of democracy and the concept of belonging. Students were encouraged to witness and reflect on conflict, learning to listen, understand and seek common ground. Watch the course highlight real to dive into the pressing questions of our time and see how thoughtful dialogue can pave the way for greater understanding in a divided world.
