In today’s video, Jamey chats with a game design student (Michael Fetters) at a local university about tabletop game publishing. Here are the topics we covered: 00:00 - Introduction 01:56 - Company Growth and Distribution 04:34 - Production 08:15 - Costs and Pricing 13:00 - Digital Games and Apps 14:58 - Crowdfunding Then and Now 17:55 - Building a Crowd 22:09 - Barriers and Partnership 30:55 - Wrap-Up Here's a question I forgot to ask Michael, so I followed up with him after the interview: Would you mind sharing your take on formal education for game design? What have you valued from Lindenwood that you don’t think would have worked as well if you had just jumped into game design and did informal research? His answer: "Formal education for game design has been a huge boon to me as a game designer. Even though I am a solo dev for games at the moment, the biggest take away for me was the ability to gain experience working as a team in some of the courses, as well as receiving and giving feedback on prototypes of games we were developing. Working through the same course exercises and assisting each other helped me to expand my view on games and game design in ways that simple informal research would be been less likely to accomplish. I certainly did my own informal research and studies before beginning the formal program, but I feel it accelerated my development as a game designer, as well as providing experiences that would have been more difficult to gain on my own. It helped having some basic knowledge of the technical languages and concepts before I entered, but I would recommend it as a good path for young designers."
