Starting as little more than a remote trading post under control of the Dutch East India Company, Great Britain occupied Cape Colony in 1795, following the Battle of Muizenberg, in order to stop any potential French attempt to reach India. The colony was later returned to the Dutch, but reoccupied once again after the Battle of Blaauwberg in 1806. This effectively marked the start of British control and settlers from across the United Kingdom began to arrive thereafter. Many of the original Dutch settlers, known as Boers, however, opted move inland, escaping British influence. This put them into conflict with the Xhosa, a Bantu ethnic group native to Southern Africa. And, while the Xhosa Wars are unquestionably deserving of their own video, one event we cannot overlook is the cattle-killing movement of the late 1850s. This, in short, was a millennialist movement which began among the Xhosa in 1856, and led them to destroy their own means of subsistence in the belief that it would bring about salvation by supernatural means. Ultimately, however, it dealt a fatal blow to the Xhosa, allowing the British, who later involved themselves in the conflict, to expand their influence in Southern Africa. This was not to be the last war, as the Boers eventually came into conflict with the powerful Zulu Kingdom, which, under the leadership of Shaka Zulu had brutally crushed its enemies in a event known as the Mfecane. The result of this more recent conflict between the Boers and Shaka's half-brother, Dingane, was the establishment of the short-lived Natalia Republic in 1839. #history #southafrica #africa #zulu #afrikaans #geography #ghostcountries #africanhistory CHAPTERS 00:00 Intro + The Making of Cape Colony 02:20 Dutch Cape Colony 04:20 Start of British Rule in South Africa 06:50 Xhosa Wars 09:33 Shaka Zulu + the Mfecane 11:00 Voortrekkers' War with Dingane 🤝 Patreon (https://patreon.com/GhostCountries?ut...) 💬 Discord ( / discord ) 📸 Instagram ( / ghostcountries.official ) 👍 Facebook ( / ghostcountriesyt ) 🔴 RECOMMENDED VIDEOS: 🎥 France's Very Own Australia in the South Pacific? | NEW CALEDONIA or KANAKY ( • France's Very Own Australia in the South P... ) 🎥 This Border Conflict Could Start Africa's Next War?
