It's very important to have an in depth of reading of the brief. Now this means not just skimming through the statements and the evidence, you must slowly go through the statements and slowly go through the evidence and read it all in depth. You must place the brief in order. This is a very important step because usually the brief arrives in complete chaos and not in order. So you must put it in order for yourself and the barrister. For example, things like the facts, the court attendance notice, the accused criminal history, any subpoenas, bail undertaking, forms, and custody records usually go at the beginning of the brief, followed by the statements of police officers, or any witnesses, you must create an index. It's very important to create an index that way you and the barrister know exactly what is in the brief. It's through creation of the index that you also see which statements are outstanding, which is a very important thing to get on top of. You must tab the brief. Now you can do it numerically or you can do it by listing all the statements names for example constable Murphy. I find that the best way to tab a brief is to go through each statement and list exactly who has created that statement, that way when the barrister or yourself needs a statement you can efficiently go straight to the brief and find that statement. You must summarise the brief. Now I find it very helpful to go to the important statements first and summarise the most important statements, then go to the other statements and summarise those. That way the barrister has a complete summary of the brief and when he needs something fast he can look at the summary to determine which statements are the important statements. This is a very helpful in trial. Also an important thing when you preparing your brief once you determine which statements are outstanding to get on top of that straight away. It's very very important that you obtain all outstanding statements and evidence in the brief.
