Final Days of the Riverdale Steel Mill and NS Bottle Trains

On June 15th and 16th, 2025, I documented the final days of regular operations at Cleveland Cliffs Riverdale Steel Mill on Chicago's south side. The indefinite idling of the mill stemmed from low demand and pricing for products produced at Riverdale. This unfortunately meant the end to a unique operation along the IHB mainline between Indiana Harbor and Riverdale. For decades, Riverdale would receive shipments of molten iron in "torpedo" cars from the blast furnace at Indiana Harbor. Being handled by Norfolk Southern, these unique bottle trains were the last of their kind on mainline rails. I was fortunate enough to follow one of these runs just days before the train would be abolished and Riverdale would begin scaling back operations.
