When faced with threat, if neither escape nor fighting is possible, our bodies go into ‘freeze’, a high tone parasympathetic activation. It's a bit like entering an altered reality. Sometimes when we freeze, we dissociate and can feel like we're watching ourselves from outside our body. As a practitioner, I have all kinds of tools to help clients come out of a freeze response, but often we can get triggered into freeze outside the treatment room.... so how do we help ourselves when this happens? 1) MOVEMENT! Movement is an antidote to freeze. Movement can arise through actually moving the body, or connecting to the movement of our own breath. Connect to movement and find gentle pathways to coming out of freeze. 2) CONNECTION! When we are frozen we are trapped alone inside ourselves. So any kind of connection can help to remedy it. It may be to hug someone, sit and have a meal, or if you don't have a human, to cuddle a pet or even a warm pillow. We tend to self-isolate when we freeze. We have to find enough awareness to do what's counterintuitive. Move and Connect! This takes awareness and a little piece of consciousness that can be our own personal cheerleader.
