Should We Use The Term Animal Holocaust? Is calling factory farming the animal holocaust a bit to extreme? Isn’t it offensive to Jewish people–comparing animals to humans? Or are people just being overly dramatic? Well, welcome to another controversial episode of Arjuneus Talks. This topic was requested by Vegansingh, after he noticed a bunch of Karens getting offended from my music video, This is Hallowcaust, which is a spinoff of This is Halloween. So you probably already know what side I am going to take on this issue, “but arjuneus that could only mean you’re an antisemitist neo-nazi, DISLIKE!” Hold up, it’ll be for shocking reasons you have never heard of, but will remember forever. So let’s hurry up and begin! So I am going to go lawyer mode and just start off with the definition of the word holocaust. And then one day maybe we can move on to numbers and letters kids! No, but seriously we have to start off with the basics because we sometimes rely too much on context and the way people use words to define words rather than actually defining words straight from the source. So dictionary.com states that holocaust has four distinct definitions. Now right off the bat you should notice the 3 out of the 4 definitions does not involve Jews. And take note that the introduction of the word to the English language dates back to the 1200’s which was way before the Jewish Holocaust, but more on this later. The one definition that does involve Jews refers to it as a historical event. So if The Holocaust is different than holocaust, then the word holocaust doesn’t completely belong to a particular group now does it? Now which of these 4 definitions of holocaust do you think the term animal holocaust refers to? You got it! Definition 4! “any mass slaughter or reckless destruction of life.” "But arjuneus why cant you just say animal genoicde? Because domesticated animals don’t fit the specific definition of a racial, political, cultural, group like us humans" Okay so now we established that it is okay under definition 4 to use the term animal holocaust without inviting any comparison to Jews. But how about those crazy animal rights activists that make direct comparisons between the Jews and animals? OK this is where it's just getting ridiculous...This isn’t about comparing any particular group to animals, because as a human, you’d probably prioritize human life over an animal. Unless it’s my dog, pick my dog. Just kidding but listen this is about empathy, it’s about learning from historical events we are already familiar with. What happened to the Jews was horrible, most of us have read about the horrors in our history books and of course Anne Frank’s diary. What I found most surprising, is that the horrible systems used to exterminate the victims of The Holocaust were directly learned and replicated from systems they already used with animals. From using transport trucks, concentration camps, gasing, shooting, burning, and dumbing bodies. Yet when we do that to animals we are supposed to call it factory farming. That’s for sure euphenism. I bet you the history books will not call it factory farming once the practice of meat-eating is canceled. In fact, they didn’t even call the holocaust the holocaust until decades later. It was initially called it a genocide and the term genoicde was specifically coined to describe the Nazi extermination. It was only once other groups started using the term genocide for their historical tragedies that some people got offended and felt a need to differentiate the Jewish genocide from the other genocides and so renamed it the Holocaust. Just look at how the western school system really puts an emphasis on the massacre of Jews but glosses over the other protected classes the Nazi’s exterminated, or glosses over the natives americans genoicde, the Pakistan genoicide, the cambodian genocide, and the mass genocide of the entire native populations of an entire continent by colonialists. Maybe it’s a type of white privilege or maybe it’s because America wasn’t the hero in that story, but they were the hero during the Nazi extermination.
