Autogenous Bone vs. Biologics: Graft Selection for Success Presented at the 2016 AAID Annual Education Conference Craig M. Misch, DDS, MDS, FAAID, DABOI/ID • Honored Fellow, American Academy of Implant Dentistry • Diplomate, American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry • Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Florida and University of Alabama Periodontics and Prosthodontics Departments • Member, Journal of Oral Implantology Editorial Board There are several techniques and materials available for implant site development. The choice may depend on a number of factors including size of the defect, osseous morphology, costs, and surgeon and/or patient preferences. Autogenous bone long has been considered the gold standard of graft materials. The trend today is to reduce patient morbidity but still provide predictable outcomes. This lecture will discuss the use of various augmentation methods using autograft. The use of growth factors such as rhPDGF and rhBMP-2 as replacements for the need to harvest bone will be examined. Learning Objectives: At the completion of this presentation, participants should be able to: 1. Recognize the advantages of using autogenous bone 2. Identify cases that autogenous bone may be preferred 3. Discuss the use of biologics to decrease morbidity and provide equivalent outcomes
