Join me on this lovely autumnal morning as we head down memory lane to revisit a countryside walk from my childhood through the beautiful Wassand Estate in East Yorkshire, England. If you enjoy this video please consider subscribing to the channel / @walktheworldaway I used to walk here regularly in the early part of my life and haven't returned since I was a teenager. The route starts down the tree-lined Wassand Lane and finishes at Hornsea Mere. Wassand is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated 3 miles from Hornsea, 18 miles from Hull and forms part of the civil parish of Seaton. It is 137 acres (55.5 hectares) not including Low Wood and the other plantations at the west end of Hornsea Mere and was served from 1865 to 1953 by Wassand railway station on the Hull and Hornsea Railway. Wassand [Hall] was a settlement in the Domesday Book, in the hundred of Holderness [North Hundred] and the county of Yorkshire. It had a recorded population of 4 households in 1086, putting it in the smallest 20% of settlements recorded in Domesday. Wassand Hall is a large Regency house overlooking Hornsea Mere. The hall was designated a Grade II* listed building in March 1952 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. Wassand Estate has been in one family ownership since 1520 and enjoys beautiful walled gardens, woodland walks and a half-mile park walk with views of Hornsea Mere. The estate has been in the possession of the Constable family since about 1520 and was rebuilt in 1815 during the Regency period, the original house having been demolished because it had fallen into disrepair. Ownership passed to a widow, Lady Ernestine Strickland-Constable in 1975. Upon her death in 1995, the estate became held by her great-nephew, Rupert Russell, who resides at Wassand Hall with his wife Catherine. In 1830 a ‘new cottage on the Hornsea Road' was built by Charles Constable ‘in order to have my letter bag left there'- this may be a reference to East Lodge (see thumbnail) which was formerly called Hornsea Lodge, although it is said to have a datestone of 1846 inside. It is single-storey, whitewashed, with a decorative fish-scale slate roof. The pointed windows with hood moulds have Gothic glazing bars. The road on which the lodge stands became the principal entrance to Wassand Hall. We also find the serpentine pond along the same road which was shown on the 1809 plan, and it is suggested that the pond was formed from a remnant of an ancient drainage system. Hornsea Mere lies north-east of Wassand Hall, and extends to the town of Hornsea. Some 2 miles in length and up to 0.75 mile in width, it is the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire. It was acquired by the Constable family in the 16th century. When the park was extended in the early-19th century, after Charles Constable inherited the estate in 1812, the mere became an integral part of the landscape, which much additional planting around the perimeter carried out by the estate.
