We bred our Dexter heifers last year; this summer they both gave birth to bull calves. We have bred them both for a second time (one confirmed and waiting on the other). Although not minis, they are smaller than other full sized breeds. Our AI tech expressed the significant difference between breeding Holsteins & Jerseys compared to Dexters. In general, the better our observations are of our cows, the better success we have with our AI. To confirm if our cows are open or pregnant, we send a blood sample sometime after 30 days post breeding. I am grateful for all of our mentors and neighbors who answer our questions and concerns about cattle health and behavior. Their input is priceless. If you want to begin an adventure with cattle, chickens, or any other farm animals, having someone who can advise or teach you is indispensable. You can assume if your cow does not return to heat that she is pregnant. However, we find the blood test a nice confirmation. If you choose to send in a sample to check for pregnancy, I recommend watching youtube videos for how to draw blood from the cow's tail. We use BioPRYN (cost to mail is usually ~$5 and the test cost varies a little by lab but is around $3 (you can add a biosecurity test (BLV & Johnes) for $10.50 at some labs—such as Sage Ag Labs. The BioPRYN sample is quite stable and doesn’t need refrigeration and will be ok for a week or so in the mail if not hot, but in order to test a biosecurity sample, it must arrive cold and therefore costs more to mail.
