In October of 2010, a user uploaded a video where they discovered a strange house that they did not build in Minecraft Alpha. This kickstarted a mystery that lasted for nearly 15 years. RGN Discord server: / discord Link to Dead's Video: • Very Strange House in Minecraft That I Did... Link to Troney's Video: • Solving a 14 Year Old Minecraft Mystery - ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FOOTNOTES: Footnote 1: To the best of my understanding, air counts as a "nonflammable block." In fact, Dead has a previous Let's Play video that showcases this glitch. Footnote 2: Popping in also occurs when Minecraft is loading chunks that already exist on the disk. Footnote 3: Dead also got close to discovering the chunks on September 23rd, when he explored the southwestern side of the map (in blue). In fact, it appears as though he actually loaded some of the foreign chunks, although he apparently did not see them. Footnote 4: While this indicates that the world was played on as late as Alpha v1.0.17, it does not indicate the first version it was played on. The initial world could be as old as as old as Alpha v1.0 (Infdev 20100630-1835), released on June 30th 2010. Footnote 5: Alpha chunk filepaths are deterministic: a given filepath corresponds to the same chunk location in every world. It is possible to calculate the specific chunk filepath if you want to copy it to a different world. Footnote 6: Between Alpha v1.0.4 and Alpha 1.2.0, a new world had a 25% chance of being in "Winter Mode," which caused the entire world to be covered in snow. This is determined by a level.dat NBT tag. It appears as though upgrading a world can sometimes change whether a world is snowy or not, but I haven't been able to determine the specific conditions required for this. When a world changes from regular to snowy, existing chunks can get slightly overwritten with snow. However, the terrain itself does not change. Footnote 7: The rate of 20 ticks per second (TPS) is ideal, but it's not uncommon to see this dip lower, especially on weaker hardware. As a result, there isn't truly a 1:1 correspondence between ticks and gametime. This is a subtlety that doesn't substantially change the analysis. Footnote 8: Seed generation broke in Alpha v1.2.0, meaning that the same seed would produce a different world after this version. This suggests that Zappa did not play on the world much after he upgraded to Beta - at least not enough to generate new chunks using the new generation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS: To be updated as needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MUSIC BY RGN: "Vox Cubica" - • Vox Cubica "Beyond the Vessel" - • "Beyond the Vessel" - Music by RetroGamingNow "The Watcher" - • "The Watcher" - Music by RetroGamingNow "Gemini" - • "Gemini" - Music by RetroGamingNow "Unknown Enigma" - • "Unknown Enigma" - Music by RetroGamingNow "Lilypad" - • "Lilypad" - Music by RetroGamingNow "The Depths" - • "The Depths" - Music by RetroGamingNow "White Eyes" - • "White Eyes" - Music by RetroGamingNow ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SECTIONS: 0:00 PART I: DISCOVERY 21:40 PART II: BREAKTHROUGH 29:41 PART III: DISCREPANCY DISCLAIMER: While piracy is part of this mystery, I do not support anything illegal.
