Valerie Mendoza of San Antonio shares the story of her daughter, Katelyn Angel Vara, who has been missing since August 6, 2024. Once a quiet, athletic, and well-mannered child who loved basketball and grew up in Catholic school, Katelyn struggled with heroin addiction beginning in her teens and spent over a decade cycling through rehab, methadone treatment, jail, and recovery attempts. Despite the challenges, she was a devoted mother who had recently begun taking steps toward stability and had agreed to sign over parental rights so her son could have security. On the morning she disappeared, she was seen at her methadone clinic, made a 911 call from a nearby hotel, and was never seen again. Valerie describes the delays in getting her reported missing, the alleged failures in response, and the ongoing homicide investigation that now surrounds her case. Eighteen months later, her family continues searching for answers, determined to keep Katelyn’s name and story alive.
