Joanna talks with Tim Woods, University of Kentucky Extension Professor about high tunnels KY started with NRCS EQIP high tunnel program in 2011, a bit later than most other states, and now has 994 cost-share tunnels constructed, most in the U.S. Some estimates place 2400 total tunnels in KY. HT a great fit for KY for early and late season extension. It helps further with quality and consistency of product. Most specialty crop growers in KY are small and selling into direct markets. Farm markets, schools, restaurants and other similar channels benefit from HT systems in this way and it opens good opportunities for producers. Recent HT survey highlights of KY producers show more of them further expanding into farm to school, on-farm retail, and restaurants – and still a strong emphasis on farm markets. 70% indicated demand for “local” was increasing in their markets. The biggest training needs now are around weed management, cover crop choices, soil fertilization, disease management, and insects.
