Carlos Flores and I took our Hi-8 camcorders to the Havana JazzPlaza 98 International Jazz Festival in December 1998. This is a small excerpt of the music we experienced. At a private dinner hosted by the US Interest Section in Havana for US and Cuban musicians, Master flutist Orlando Valle "Maraca" duets with the late Master Pianist Frank Emilio (while genius virtuoso Ernan Lopez Nussa watches in the background), Chucho Valdes plays with Sherman Irby, Horacio El Negro, Changuito, Maraca et.al. Roy Hargrove jams after hours at the Hotel Riviera with John Benitez, Steven Scott, Roberto Fonseca & Chuchito Valdes. At home with pianist/violinist Guillermo Rubalcaba and his sons Jesus Rubalcaba (piano) and William Rubalcaba (bass) and their charanga with Raul Planas. Milwaukee WI born drummer Ernie Adams sits in on timbales. Tata Guines Jr. leads an all-women rumba group "Rumba Morena" and Steve Turre sits in on Conch Shells. Steve is among the world's greatest trombonists and can be seen in the SNL Band on NBC every week. Finally, a street rumba in the "Callejon de Hamel" led by Amado Dedeu and his group "Clave Y Guauanco" with solos by Amadito Dedeu Jr, Roberto Vizcaino Sr., and Puerto Rican Master Giovanni Hidalgo et.al. It has been 24 years since we filmed this and a lot of music has gone down since then! We honor the memory of those who are no longer with us! Film by Carlos Flores and Michael Reyes. Thanks to Raul Galvan (editor) and Michael Orlove and Willie Ney.
