This was the twelfth meeting of the National WSUD Compliance Network, and the first meeting of 2026. The Network brings together experienced and diverse stakeholders across the stormwater industry under one roof to shape the future of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) practices in Australia. Project Lead Daniel Rider was joined by Justine Barrett, PhD student at the University of Tasmania and CSIRO, leading the stormwater litter prevention work. Her research aims to reduce plastic pollution from reaching our waterways and oceans by improving litter capture in stormwater systems across Australia. Justine provided early findings of her research. Her work has analysed audit results from 1,269 gross pollutant traps (GPTs) across 33 Australian municipalities, surveyed industry stakeholders to identify barriers to GPT maintenance, and is trialling AI-powered litter monitoring cameras and GPT level sensors. In addition, Daniel provided an update on the WSUD Maintenance Compliance Framework, including the current focus on finding an organisation to pilot the implementation of the framework.
