Komodo Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to 4000 to 5,000 Komodo dragons. Komodo is part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands and forms part of the Komodo National Park. There are no hotels on Komodo Island and nearby Labuan Bajo serves as the perfect gateway for your Komodo Island adventure. The Komodo dragons share this island with approximately 1,800 humans who also call this their home. The original native population of the Komodo people, has been extinct 50 years. The island's present-day population are descendants of former convicts who were exiled to Komodo and have mixed with Bugis from Sulawesi. The people are primary Islam with a few Christian and Hindu congregations. The primary language spoken on Komodo Island is Bahasa Indonesian which is the official language of Indonesia.
