These auditors, from channels like News Now California and San Joaquin Valley Transparency, were filming inside a mental health clinic, causing significant distress to patients. Their aggressive behavior and lack of empathy led to a mental health patient having a panic attack, screaming for help. The auditors repeatedly argued that photography is not a crime and claimed they were within their First Amendment rights to film in public spaces. However, they failed to understand that the mental health clinic is considered a non-public forum, where filming is restricted to protect patient privacy under HIPAA regulations. Despite being asked to leave multiple times, the auditors continued to film and harass staff and patients. They made irrational arguments about the facility's responsibility to protect patient information, ignoring the fact that their actions were causing severe distress to vulnerable individuals. One particular auditor, emboldened by the situation, began to taunt a security officer, calling him a "chihuahua" and challenging his authority. This culminated in a confrontation where the security officer stood his ground, refusing to be provoked by the auditor's insults and threats. The situation escalated as the auditors continued to defy orders to leave, resulting in a standoff where one auditor accused the security officer of violating his personal space and threatened to sue. The security officer remained calm and repeated that the space was public, demonstrating how to handle such provocations without resorting to violence or aggressive behavior. This episode highlights the dangers of auditors misinterpreting their rights and the significant impact their actions can have on vulnerable populations. It also showcases the importance of maintaining professionalism and calm in the face of provocation.
