Our journey continues as we close out another season and prepare for another. The hives have been consolidated from out yards. We have removed the dead outs and culled the weakest hives. Under 3 weeks until we load up the trucks for almond orchards in California. Our bees need an average of 8 frames per hive and no hives under 6 frames will be accepted for by our growers. Look from the bottom of your hives first. One its easier since the top is still glued together by propolis. Second you always want to inspect from the bottom up. You can't see down into the frames from the top down. Count the frames that are covered in bees on each side. That will give you your hive frames count. To find your average. Count the total frames of bees in your hive then divide by number of hives. Hives that we find below 6 frames need help if they are to go. 4 or less we find a cull hive to add. 5 we likely get a frame of capped brood from a 10 plus that can spare it. Beekeeping is hard, if it was easy everyone would be doing it.
