So who remembers Animal Ark? It was a feel-good CITV drama that ran for 13 episodes across two series in the late 90s which followed the exploits of vet's daughter Mandy Hope. It was based on a series of books by Lucy Daniels (though I believe that's a pseudonym for more than one author), and it features plenty of guest stars, many of whom are four-legged. This particular episode, which was originally broadcast on Thursday, 2nd October, 1997, is called Goat in the Garden, and it's about a goat which gets into... well, there's no need to spoon-feed you the plot, but I will say that it's all very warm and friendly, with just the one dastardly character, and the only moments of deathly peril being completely undercut by the fact that it's a goat we're all worrying about. A *goat*. Not that I'm knocking the show - I did quite enjoy it. It's a sort of 90s Enid Blyton world they've created, all very agricultural and old-fashioned, with everyone looking forward to participating in the Welford Annual County Show, whether it be the veg competition, the race, the Best Goat contest... Couple that with nice characters, a bit of unlikely romance, some funny jokes (such as milking the billy goat, Blackie the Golden Labrador, or the line about manure), and a plot where everything works out, and you've got a programme that's not only difficult to dislike, but will also strike a real chord with some who will absolutely fall in love with the fictional universe. This is my first exposure to Animal Ark, so I'm not really sure which characters are regulars and who are the guest stars, but keep an eye out in this one for familiar faces such as Gareth Hunt and Rowena Cooper. I'm not sure whether young lead actress Karianne Henderson is still in 'the biz' (her last entry on IMDB is from 2004), but her screen friend James is played by Gwilym Lee, and he was Brian May in the Oscar-winning Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Did you recognise him? One other name in the credits to note is Bob Hescott, who was a main writer for the Grotbags solo spin-off series, proving once and for all that all roads on this channel lead back to the Pink Windmill one way or another. Don't miss a few ads and some CITV continuity at the beginning, including a brief unscheduled appearance of a countdown clock on the two-minute mark. Grateful thanks to Lee for providing this recording. (To the best of my knowledge, the contents of this video are not currently available commercially anywhere in the world.
