Filmed on the 30 years of “State Transit Buses event 17/03/2019 One that received a high speed diff. Body: Mercedes Benz O305/PMC Mark 4 Fleet Numbers: 2717, 2728-3070, 3072-3082 Total Built: 355 Entered Service: 1983-1987 Withdrawn from Service: 2010-2012 Notes: The VoV influence of the Mark II and III Mercedes Benz O305s was replaced by the "Stadt 80" design on the Mark IV variant - the windscreens on these curved around the sides of the front, eliminating the A pillar that was present in the earlier Mercedes Benz O305s which created a blind spot. There was also a larger destination aperture and the look was much squarer than previous models. While most of the fleet were delivered with the traditional roller blind destination equipment, 20 vehicles, the odd numbered vehicles between 2761 and 2799, were delivered with STC Canon destination equipment (these had no supplementary destination under the windscreen) front side and rear. The seating on these buses was a blue 'frontrunner' fabric material rather than the vinyl 'tartan' found on other buses, after some time they reverted to the vinyl tartan as seats were replaced. The electronic displays proved troublesome and the buses limited to the new 400 cross regional route which commenced in 1989 (they were signwritten as such as well) - they were soon replaced with Mercedes Benz O405s and to allow for use on other routes, roller blinds were installed. They were delivered new to each depot, the largest group ended up being in Newcastle, a portion of the fleet ended up being refurbished in the early 2000's. Like the Mark IIIs before them, a large amount were scrapped after STA service given there was only a niche market available. However, 2717 (the prototype) and odd numbered vehicles between 2761-2799 were delivered with STC-Canon dot matrix destination systems on the front, side and rear these were eventually retrofitted with roller blonds Some units received electric motorised roller systems later in life The final four in service of this class (3009, 3059, 3065 and 3073) were withdrawn from Ryde depot after returning from their afternoon school runs on Thursday 18th October 2012 with 3073 being last back into the depot. Ending an era spanning 35 years and 1317 buses, the largest fleet of Mercedes Benz O305's in the world.
