The West Point Mint Facility is a U.S. Mint production and depository facility erected in 1937 near the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, United States. Originally it was called the West Point Bullion Depository, at t one point it had the highest concentration of silver of any U.S. mint facility, It has since minted mostly commemorative gold and silver coins and stored gold for the United States. September 1983 saw the first appearance of the "W" mint mark (from this still unofficial U.S. Mint) on a $10 gold coin commemorating the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. This was the first legal tender U.S. gold coin since 1933. In 1986, American Gold Eagle bullion coins were solely produced at this facility, again with no mint mark. The West Point Bullion Depository was granted mint status on March 31, 1988. Starting in 1999 American Silver Eagle bullion coins were also produced at the mint. Over the years some very cool modern-era rarities have been issued with the W Mintmark, like the 1995 W Silver Eagle, one of only 30K minted and the most desirable silver eagle available today. Other one time issues, such as the 2006 20 the Anniversary Gold Eagle set that had the first ever reverse proof gold coin and a mintage of only 10K coins. They also made a 3 coin silver set in 2006, also in reverse proof. Specially made coins with the W mintmark are sought after by collectors because the newest minting technology and design often comes from the West Point Mint. If you’re looking for the newest in coin striking design, look no further than the W mintmark to see the best the US has to offer. Questions about the West point mint?
