Fiona Macleod was the pseudonym of Scot William Sharp (1855-1905). Sharp and his wife (his cousin) Elizabeth Sharp (1856-1932?) helped contribute the wealth of Scottish literature and folklore to the Celtic revival through their research, translations and publications. William, on a trip to Italy to visit Elizabeth's aunt, fell for writer Edith Wingate Rinder. To write romances inspired by Rinder, Sharp adopted a woman's name to not arouse suspicion around his wife. This name, Fiona Macleod, developed into a completely different identity for Sharp. He demanded his sister, Mary Sharp, write letters to be from Fiona, he responded to correspondence in the name of Fiona and he advocated for Fiona in his own masculine voice. The identity of Fiona Macleod was guessed at by friend W. B. Yeats, but not known until the publication of Elizabeth Macleod's Memoir in 1910.
