Unheard Voices: 1 Vahid Afkari

Vahid Afkari was arrested in September 2018 together with his two brothers, Navid and Habib, for participating in a peaceful demonstration against the government's management of the economy and the rampant corruption among the political classes. But the prosecution quickly fabricated a new charge against the brothers: murder. Vahid's brother, Navid, a one time wrestling champion, was executed in September 2020, and Vahid was given a 54 year sentence. His brother Habib was sentenced to 27 years. In this clip we hear Vahid himself speaking about his case and the way it was conducted. The audio was recorded from a phone call from Shiraz's Adel-abad prison. It dates from early September, or late August 2020, i.e., shortly before the 'execution' of Navid. It should be added that Vahid and Habib have been in solitary confinement since September 2020 with no access to lawyers, family, or phone calls. They have been kept completely isolated -- even from other prison inmates -- in order that their story does not become known.
