James Kalm, between riding his bike everywhere, and his status as “art world pariah”, has been living in a state of “social distancing” for decades. So, why should you risk the paranoia of exposure to the Coronavirus? Your corresponded slipped into record views of Julian Schnabel’s “The Patch of Blue the Prisoner Calls the Sky” at PACE. Having seen his first Schnabel exhibition in 1979, your reporter has kept an eye on the influential production of this artist. With “The Patch of Blue…” Schnabel continues his investigation of surfaces to paint on, as well as the structural forms of what can be called a painting. Working on a massive scale, these paintings employ found tinted fabrics stretched on eccentrically shaped frames. These picture planes seem to have been stretched, pinched, or bowed causing a sensation of warped perspective, and harkening back to classic surrealism and Abstract-Expressionism, longtime influences of the artist.
