At its proximal end, the muscle is comprised of a very small belly that originates at the lateral epicondyle of the femur above lateral head of gastrocnemius. Moving distally, the muscle has a very long and thin tendon which extends all the way to its insertion point at the calcaneal tuberosity. The plantaris muscle is innervated by the tibial nerves. As for functions, the muscle is involved in knee flexion, plantar flexion at the ankle joint. The plantaris is also known as a muscle involved in proprioception.
