Since August 2021, Concentric by Ginkgo, working with the CDC and XpresCheck, has tracked COVID-19 variants through anonymous testing in adult passengers arriving from strategic international flights around the United States. In its first year, this volunteer program collected more than 7,000 pooled samples from over 70,000 passengers. The program identified the first reported instances of BA.2 and BA.3 variants in the US weeks before other detection. Early detection can provide the information needed to respond to emerging infectious diseases before they become outbreaks. This program has demonstrated that it works to help detect new variants, and we know biosecurity strategies tend to work best at scale. We are working to expand this program to incorporate passive monitoring modalities such as aircraft wastewater surveillance, to broaden the menu of pathogens of interest that can be tracked, and to provide access to these biosecurity capabilities to more key transit hubs around the globe.
