Gary here at Joe's Hydro with The Sunleaves Rocks Growing Medium. Sunleaves Rocks come in both 0.25" - 0.5" and 0.5" - 1.5" sizes. In this video I am featuring the .5" - 1.5" Growing Medium. There are a lot of soil-less options out there and Sunleaves decided to take the initiative and create a reusable growing medium with serious water holding capabilities for use in any kind of garden! The rocks are made by super-heating shale to temperatures up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, rendering them pH-neutral and chemically inert. This helps save time and money when adding nutrients because most nutrients are pH-buffered or they are engineered to be at a certain pH level when mixed with water. As soon as you apply that nutrient solution to the plants root medium, the solution becomes exposed to variables and can change its pH level and its contents if any of the medium dissolved in the solution. The contaminated solution now has to be readjusted to correct this problem. This is why pH buffered, sterile mediums are desirable to soil-less gardeners. The porosity of this product is one of my favorite things about it. This is beneficial for many things like improving capillary action and beneficial bacteria. With more surface area the roots have better oxygen access by maintaining a better oxygen to water ratio. The more surface area also provides room for nutrients to hang out and be more available to the roots. The medium also contains silica which promotes plant health and vigor. The Sunleaves Rocks can also be used in soil gardens to help aerate the soil and increase drainage. Sunleaves rocks aren't perfectly round like their slogan boasts "the rock that doesn't roll!" This helps for a couple reasons but what I really like is when I tilt my buckets to look at the roots, they stay put and don't roll around or fall out of the netted pots.
