Driven on a cloudy morning in September 2024. The Simplon Pass is a high mountain pass in the Pennine Alps connecting Brig in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, with Domodossola in Piedmont, Italy. Its lowest point lies at 2,005 meters (6,578 ft) above sea level. Unlike other major Alpine passes, the Simplon has been used as a trade route since the Stone Age. However, its development as a significant transportation artery occurred much later. The modern road across the Simplon was built between 1801 and 1805 under Napoleon Bonaparte, primarily for military purposes, to transport artillery pieces through the pass. Prior to this, a mule track had existed, but it was not suitable for wheeled vehicles. The pass remains open year-round, facilitated by its relatively gentle gradients and the presence of numerous avalanche galleries. The Simplon Tunnel, a railway tunnel opened in 1906, and its second bore opened in 1922, runs beneath the pass, connecting Brig and Domodossola by rail and significantly improving travel times. The pass is renowned for its scenic beauty, featuring dramatic mountain landscapes and the iconic Simplon Hospice, built by the Hospitaller monks in the 17th century and later expanded under Napoleon's orders. The pass also hosts the Schlosshotel Simplon, a historic hotel, and the Stockalper Palace in Brig, which serves as a testament to the region's historical importance as a trade route.
